As time went by and opportunities presented John pursued trout across the globe, from the Western American rivers, creeks and high altitude lakes to the rivers and streams of Labrador, New Zealand and Europe. <div>i got out for a few hours this afternoon on my home water, the Vermont side of the Battenkill River. &nbsp;The river is starting to take shape, the bugs were out and the fish were paying attention. &nbsp;Several quality wild trout were landed and one monster in the 25" range - just about all my Orvis Recon 3wt. could handle.</div>

<div>Cold rainy and snowy storm has fish still in winter holding water. &nbsp;i appreciate the extra moisture its good for the water table - this moisture will bubble up through river bed springs keeping the Battenkill cool and fishing well through July.</div>

The sun was out and air temps reached 40 degrees.  I couldn't stand it so wadered-up and headed to the Battenkill river to swing some large streamers for big browns looking for a late winter snack.  I found fish in their winter holding water and was able to bring this big boy to hand after a good tussle.  First Battenkill River brown of 2024 - just over 23" not a bad start to the year!

Take a guided fly fishing float trip on the legendary Battenkill river or one of several other highly productive rivers in the area not as well known (a.k.a. pressured).  The 14' Smithfly fly fishing raft will get us to the unreached places targeting browns, rainbows and brook trout.   You will fish from the boat and in certain key spots get out a wade.  We will fly fish employing several tactics and techniques depending on the hatch, conditions and fish behavior.  Some approaches are common, some are old school and some I've developed over years of fishing these waters.

Get out for a guided wade trip to the upper stretches of the Green Mountain tributaries for brookies or concentrate on key pools and runs for browns and rainbows in the main branches of one of 5 epic southern Vermont rivers.  This is a great way to go when you don't have time to float an entire section or are very new to the sport and want to focus on the fundamentals of casting, line management, wading and reading rivers .

Fine fuels remain very dry across Vermont according to the
Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. This
combined with low relative humidity values of 25 to 35 percent
and developing south winds of 5 to 15 mph with localized gusts 20
to 25 mph may have an impact on fire weather conditions today,
especially during the early to mid afternoon hours. If any fires
were to start the weather and fuel conditions could cause fires to
quickly get out of control and be difficult to contain.
