Solid day of fly fishing this gem of  southern Vermont.  We floated 4 miles of the Walloomsac river with steady action throughout the day.  One of the 2 sports caught his first fish on the fly and the other somewhat seasoned had steady action.

<div>Bugs everywhere and after some early in the week thunder storms the river is back in shape. &nbsp;Big hatch of caddis today, i saw a few splashy rises and tride swinging wets to them but success was had suburface. &nbsp;Man, its been an amazing Spring, 3 fish north of 22" on the Battenkill in the last 2 weeks.</div>

<div>i got out for a few hours this afternoon on my home water, the Vermont side of the Battenkill River. &nbsp;The river is starting to take shape, the bugs were out and the fish were paying attention. &nbsp;Several quality wild trout were landed and one monster in the 25" range - just about all my Orvis Recon 3wt. could handle.</div>

<div>Cold rainy and snowy storm has fish still in winter holding water. &nbsp;i appreciate the extra moisture its good for the water table - this moisture will bubble up through river bed springs keeping the Battenkill cool and fishing well through July.</div>

The sun was out and air temps reached 40 degrees.  I couldn't stand it so wadered-up and headed to the Battenkill river to swing some large streamers for big browns looking for a late winter snack.  I found fish in their winter holding water and was able to bring this big boy to hand after a good tussle.  First Battenkill River brown of 2024 - just over 23" not a bad start to the year!

February marks the ideal kickoff for Fly Fishing in Vermont! Setting out bright and early, we seize the opportunity to target those eager trouts, and as anticipated, our efforts pay off with a satisfying catch. Amidst our guided fishing excursions, one participant manages to reel in a splendid Rainbow Trout with their very first cast!

<div>Wonderdul fall fly fishing day in southern vermont. &nbsp;5 trout hooked a two landed one rainbow trout close to 20" in length. &nbsp;Terrestrials, nymphs, a streamers with some really exiting chases.</div>

<div>We've had the rainiest July on record, I'm sure you saw our little stste in the news this summer. &nbsp;While much of the state was hammered our little corner in the Battenkill Valley faired relatively well. &nbsp;Strong flows and cool water temps has the trout very healthy this year. &nbsp;While I traditionally don't book trout trips in late July and August due to low, warm water this year I have got out a little with friends and found the fish happy and healthy. &nbsp;This abundent summer rain is setting us up for an amazing fall. &nbsp;I'll be guiding the back half of September and all of October on southern vermont rivers. &nbsp;Book early if you want to get out and have some chasing browns and brookies all colored up in there spawning coolers and an occasional big fat hold over rainbow or two...</div>

<div>Big rain the last week had Southern Vermont rivers up significatly. &nbsp;The Wallomsac was at 500CFS today verses its normal mid-summer flow if 100 CFS. &nbsp;The fish where pushed out of there usual holds into softer water but continued to feed subsurface. &nbsp;We had good rainbow and brown trout action all morning on small weighted nymphs. &nbsp;</div>

<div>2 boats 4 good friends over a dozen fish. &nbsp;We got some much needed rain in Southern VT and the fish responded facoribke. Mostly nymph fishing today but close to 20 hook-uo and a dozen browns to net.</div>

<div>Fly fishing trout in southern Vermont has been a lot of fun the past few weeks. &nbsp;Cool weather has kept the water temps nice and cool despite no rain. &nbsp;</div>

<div>Steady day of quality fish for both a seasoned fly fisherman and a fist time fly fisher. &nbsp;Double digit day with sone quality fish pushing 18" on the surface, emerging and nymphs near the bottom. &nbsp;Fish where moving to the fly, brown trout and rainbow trout. &nbsp;Really fun day!</div>

Another epic day fishing southern Vermont trout waters. &nbsp;steady fish all day on nymphs and streamers...

Double digit day in more ways than one.  Well over 10 fish landed and several in the 18" plus range with one big female coming in at 22".  River flows were manageable in the 400 cfs range and fish where keying on cadis at every stag in the life cycle.  A really fun day to be out there... 

Fished the Batten Kill river on the NY side of the line today- water temps high forties, air temps low forties and steady rain. &nbsp;Fortunatly the river flows weren't bad and we managed to land a few browns. &nbsp;Saw some caddis but trout where down all our action we on nymphs nesr the bottom. &nbsp;

<div>The first major hatch (Hendrickson) of the Vermont fly fishing season was in full force today on the Battenkill River in Southern Vermont with thousands of bugs coming off starting around 1pm. &nbsp;Fish where active moving up in the water column to eat. &nbsp;I had a very large fish break me off but managed to land three nice browns in the 10-12" range.</div>

I had a few hours this morning so got out on my home waters, Vermont Battenkill River, to get the rust off and to see how my peeps made it through the winter.  It was snowing with air temps in the high 30’s and water temps in the low 40’s, water was certainly up but manageable.  Straight light, drop shot tandem nymph rig on a Orvis Recon 10’ 3wt did the trick.  A bit thin but healthy 20” wild Vermont Battenkill brown trout danced with me and posed for pictures.

<div>I got out on the Battenkill river for some scouting snd little fly fishing during the warm part of the day. &nbsp;Flows are up but not crazy. &nbsp;Water temps where in the low 40's. &nbsp;I&nbsp;<span style="font-size: 1em;">brought a streamer rig and euro nymh rig with me and much to my shagrin I found a winter black stone fly hatch in full swing. &nbsp;it was fun to get out and kick around for an hour or so -- next time out I'll hit it a little harder so I can post a fish pick. &nbsp;Some Vermont fly fishing guides are posting some nice fish taken on streamers in the slow winter holding spots.</span></div>

<div>This foot of snow was a much welcome and needed event in the high altitudes of the green mountains in Southern Vermont. &nbsp;After a relativly light snow fall Feburary, March storms have added nicely to the snow pack which will translate in fresh cold water in the tributaries making there way down to our prime valley rivers the Batrenkill, Hoosick and Walloomsac. &nbsp;Winter snow fall is so important to keeping our rivers cool and flowing for our indigenous trout populations. &nbsp;While the Battenkill has thousands of springs that keep it cool and flowing well into July our other primary valley rivers rely on snow pack feed tributaries from the mountains to keep them cool and supporting the brown, brook and rainbow trout we love to chase. &nbsp;While I've been a Vermont fly fishing guide for the last six years, I've lived and fly fished this beutiful area for the past 30 years. &nbsp;Know&nbsp;</div>

<div>Recent snow and rain has been good for Southern Vermont Trout fisheries. &nbsp;Today i restocked the streamer box, &nbsp;it wont be long before water temps start to inch up and those big battenkill browns start to move up out of their deep winter holding water to become a bit more active. &nbsp;Starting to have those fly fishing guide dreams...&nbsp;</div>

Slammin day with an experienced fly fisherman in the boat. &nbsp;Water levels where low, super clear and the water temps where in the high 50's. &nbsp;We had 15+ trout eat, hooked a dozen and landed 8 fish. &nbsp;Most of the fish caught where rainbow trout in the 14-18" range and one big 22+" male brown trout! Wonderdul day to be fly fishing for trout in southern Vermont rivers.

A couple of buddies booked me to celebrate his 75th birithday. We fly fished southern Vermont rivers over two days and landed some quality fish. Temps where cool, trees turning color and fish in spawning colors...

<div>Big rain in southern Vermont all day yesterday had the &nbsp;Walloomsac running 4x normal flows but there where fish to be had. &nbsp;On today's guided fly fishing float trip 3 quality fish where landed on streamers and nymph rigs. &nbsp;</div>

<div>Rain was heavy today but the first half of the trip was very fishable. &nbsp;i had a first time fly fisher in the boat and he did great. &nbsp;Nymphed and streamer fished given the high off-color water consitions. &nbsp;we got a few eats and one very healthy male brown was landed, photographed and released.</div>

<div>Really fun day on the Battenkill river with Tom and Jason. &nbsp;Water temps started the day in the high 50's, air temps the same and the Battenkill water flows where nice at arond 350 CFS. Both men where very good fly fishers- &nbsp;we tried a lot of different set ups, while the fishing was not robust they where able get a dozen or so chases, eight or so hits and 3 brown trout to the net.</div>

Guided Float trip in 550 CFS and low visibility made us work a little to get browns to eat on the Battenkill River; Big dark streamers on 300 gain sinking line did the trick with over a dozen chases, 7 eats and 3 fish to the net.;A few big fish eat and and went airborne right at the boat - that will get your heart going...

It's time to get out there and fly fish in southern Vermont again!  Last night in southern Vermont it was 45 degrees.  When I checked my backyard stretch of the Battenkill this morning it was water temps where in the low 60's.  Such a welcome number after such a dry, hot summer.  I'm looking forward to fishing this fall with those that booked a trip...

We got some much needed rain in Southern VT which got the water up to normal level and just a touch off color which was great for tricking wiely brown trout into eating.  On today guided fly fishing float trip we had close to 20 eats, a dozen hook-ups and 6 fish landed the largest a 19"+ brown. It  was steady action and a lot of fun...

I had the privilege of introducing Fly Fishing to this young couple. What a fun day! We discovered muskrat, deer, a bald eagle and some quality fish during our 4-mile float down a southern Vermont river.

<div>Steady day on the river starting with rising fish early morning and ending with some streamer chases and catches. &nbsp;We had a cold feont push through the night before so i exoected things to be slow but not the case- we had steady action the entire float.</div>

Steady quality fish all day long.  Really fun day with one experienced fly fish and the newbie father-in-law who learned really fast.  Over 10 fish to net, some break offs and a whole lot of fun and laughter...

Bright sunny day fly fishing in southern Vermont. We managed to get a dozen or so trout to eat and a five to net (2 long line releases but we had a quality dance). &nbsp;All sub-surface today given the late start but still fun. Some thick fish - all rainbows and browns in the 16-18" range.

<div>Steady action all day today. &nbsp;warer was a but low and no major hatch activity but had fish eating all day with small nymphs and a dry/dropper set-up. &nbsp;4 solid fish to net and a few long line releases. &nbsp;Really fun float.</div>

<div>Great day with a pile of eats and several fish to net with the biggest being this 23" brown taken on a 5 wt Trident Rod, 5x tippet and a size 16 nymph. &nbsp;</div>
